Ester-CTM All the benefits of vitamin
C without the side effects
Ester-C®* is a patented, mineralized
form of vitamin C. Ascorbic acid, the vitamin C we are most familiar
with, passes through the horse's gut and is excreted too rapidly.
Vitamin C can irritate the lining of the digestive tract and
at the higher dosage needed to help the joints will cause the
formation of crystals in the urinary tract and can cause ulcers
or diarrhea. Ester-C® has a neutral pH, which means it will
not upset your horse's stomach or cause ulcers. In addition, because
of its patented formula, Ester-C® is four times more absorbable
than regular vitamin C. The primary role of Ester-C® in the
formation of collagen, the intercellular cement that is the major
stress-bearing component of bones, cartilage, teeth, tendons,
and ligaments. Ester-C® plays an important role in the cross-linking
of collagen; acts as a signaling agent to favor connective tissue
synthesis; and acts as an antioxidant to scavenge free radicals.
Although horses manufacture their own ascorbic acid, evidence
supports the theory that this may not be enough to counter the
athletic demands placed upon them.
